Kolkata, Sept. 15 -- West Bengal Medical Council (WBMC) suspended the registration numbers of five fake doctors who were practising in various parts of the state with fake certificates. These accused doctors allegedly received registration numbers from the state medical council by submitting fake MBBS certificates.
Bihar Medical Council has written to the state, saying that Seikh Yunis Hasan and Hafizul Halder, both residents of Patharpratima; Uttam Maiti from Kultali; Zulfikar Mondal of Gaighata; and Saidul Haq of Burdwan had possessed fake certificates from Bihar. These fake certificates were obtained between 2007 and 2022.
The health department has launched a probe into complaints of fake doctors. Some more individuals are under the scanner on suspicion of being fake doctors who allegedly obtained their registrations from the West Bengal Medical Council (WBMC) by providing fake documents.
A complaint regarding the registration of medical graduates based on fake degrees and invalid documents through the West Bengal Medical Council (WBMC) between 2017 and 2025 has been lodged at the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate.
The secretary of the Association of Private Hospitals and Nursing Homes (APHN), Rajeev Pandey, has lodged a complaint with the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate seeking an investigation into senior officials of the West Bengal Medical Council (WBMC) over the alleged increase in registrations of fake doctors in the state.
The complaint names the council's president Sudipta Roy, secretary Sushanta Roy, registrar Manas Chakraborty, council member and former Trinamool Congress MLA Nirmal Maji, among others.
According to APHN, the Medical Council plays a crucial role in verifying credentials and preventing unqualified individuals from entering medical practice. The organisation alleged that due to the council's failure to discharge this responsibility, registrations of fake doctors increased steadily between 2017 and 2025.
