Kolkata, May 11 -- Vidyasagar University vice-chancellor Dipak Kar was allegedly heckled by purported supporters of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) on the university campus on Monday, videos circulating on social media showed.
The videos, shared on social media, which could not be independently verified by
Millennium Post, allegedly showed protesters entering the V-C's office, raising slogans such as "ABVP zindabad", "Bharat Mata ki Jai" and "Vande Mataram", and confronting Kar during the protest. The V-C was also asked to chant "Bharat Mata ki Jai".
When the V-C asked the protesters to sit, one of them was heard saying: "We have not come here to sit." Another protester accused the varsity administration of turning the campus into a "party office".
Sources said the protest was linked to allegations of academic irregularities and dissatisfaction over examination-related issues after several students reportedly received supplementary papers.
However, ABVP state secretary Neelkantha Bhattacharjee denied the organisation's involvement in the incident.
"The incident at Vidyasagar University has no connection with ABVP. After the Assembly election results, some overenthusiastic Trinamool-backed elements are trying to create unrest on college and university campuses using ABVP's name," Bhattacharjee said in a statement on Monday evening.
He said ABVP would identify those involved and take legal action against individuals allegedly misusing the organisation's name. Attempts to contact the V-C by phone were unsuccessful till late Monday evening.
