
New Delhi, Aug. 17 -- Chennai Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT), Chennai, held its 14th annual convocation on Sunday, August 16, 2026, with Dr T. Ramasami, former Secretary, Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, as Chief Guest.
Mohit Jain, Chief Operating Officer (Publishing) and Board Member, Bennett, Coleman & Co. Ltd., was the Guest of Honour, while Dr Ganesanathan Geathiswaran, Deputy High Commissioner of Sri Lanka, South India, attended as Special Guest.
VIT Founder and Chancellor Dr G. Viswanathan presided over the ceremony. VIT Vice Presidents Dr Sankar Viswanathan and Dr G.V. Selvam, Vice Chancellor Dr V.S. Kanchana Bhaaskaran, Pro-Vice Chancellors Dr T. Thyagarajan and Dr Partha Sharathi Mallick, Directors Dr K. Sathiyanarayanan, Registrar Dr Jayabarathi T and Additional Registrar Dr P.K. Manoharan also attended.
Congratulating 4,518 UG, PG and PhD graduates, Viswanathan said only around 13 per cent of India's population had attained graduate-level education. He stressed the need to expand higher education, noting that India's growth in this area remained behind several developed countries.
Ramasami said youth have an important role in shaping their own future, families, the country and humanity.
He noted Tamil Nadu's emergence as a leader in research and development since 2000, with the State accounting for about 61 per cent of research papers published in India, including 35 per cent contributed by private universities.
He credited institutions such as VIT with contributing significantly to higher education and nation-building.
Jain urged graduates to pursue happiness, work hard, compete and build teams while developing solutions to unresolved challenges.
Geathiswaran highlighted the deep historical, cultural, religious, linguistic and social ties between India and Sri Lanka, particularly between Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka.
