India, Aug. 17 -- A licensed pistol carried by a passenger went off "accidentally" during mandatory security screening at Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport here on Sunday morning, injuring two screening personnel, officials said. The passenger, identified as Kamlesh Kedarnath Rai, has been detained and a case registered against him under Section 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The incident occurred around 9.30 am when Rai, a resident of Azamgarh, was scheduled to travel to Mumbai on Air India Express flight IX-1810 with his wife. He had declared his licensed 7.62 mm pistol and 21 live cartridges at the check-in counter as required and was escorted to the designated screening area. The projectile ricocheted, injuring two AAICLAS screening personnel, Rohit Raj and Suman Kumari. Police said the pistol's magazine came out while officials were recording the weapon's details and the number of cartridges. However, a round remained in the chamber and the weapon fired after the trigger was accidentally pressed. Kumari suffered a leg injury, while Raj was injured in the thumb. Both were taken to the New Lakshmi Trauma Centre for treatment and were reported to be undergoing treatment. The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) is examining the circumstances surrounding the discharge.
