India, July 27 -- Sale of meat, fish and eggs will remain prohibited along designated Kanwar routes in Varanasi throughout Sawan, as the Uttar Pradesh Food Safety and Drug Administration has launched a special enforcement drive to ensure safe and hygienic food for devotees visiting the Kashi Vishwanath Temple. Sawan begins on July 30, with the first Monday falling on August 3. Food outlets within three km of the Kashi Vishwanath Temple and other major Shiva temples have been directed to prominently display valid licences or registration certificates and price lists. Inspection teams are checking eateries and food stalls along major Kanwar routes from Kachhwa to Rohania, Laxa and the temple. Operators have been asked to maintain cleanliness and keep food covered. Assistant Commissioner, Food Safety, Kaushalendra Sharma said inspections would continue throughout Sawan. Violators may face monetary penalties and legal action.
