New Delhi, Sept. 3 -- India and the United States are working to establish a trade relationship that is fair, reciprocal and mutually beneficial, US Ambassador Sergio Gor said on Wednesday. Speaking at the 66th annual session of the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association in New Delhi, Gor said ties between the two countries were at a historic high and cooperation covered several sectors. He said collaboration extended beyond trade in goods to areas including information technology, data centres, pharmaceuticals, defence sales and military exercises. Gor also highlighted potential cooperation in space, referring to NASA's invitation to ISRO to participate in its Moon Base programme.
Gor said the two governments had made "real progress" on their trade understanding but stressed that economic cooperation between the two countries went well beyond goods trade. On market access, he said the principle of fairness had to work in both directions, with US suppliers and technology gaining access to the Indian market while Indian companies should be able to compete fairly in the US. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, who attended the event, expressed hope that the proposed India-US bilateral trade agreement would also be concluded soon.
Goyal is expected to travel to the US later this month for the G20 Trade Ministerial in Milwaukee, beginning September 30. He is expected to meet his US counterpart on the sidelines of the two-day meeting, where the proposed interim bilateral trade agreement may also be discussed. India and the US have been negotiating a bilateral trade agreement since Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump met in Washington on February 13, 2025.
