
Sultanpur, Oct. 4 -- An Army ambulance carrying the remains of a Subedar Major to his native village in Deoria from Chandigarh collided with a stationary truck on the Purvanchal Expressway here on Sunday, killing four people, including three members of the soldier's family, police said.
The accident occurred around 8 am near the 79.6-km mark in the Haliyapur area, close to the Ayodhya-Sultanpur border. Police said the ambulance went out of control and rammed into a truck parked on the roadside, severely damaging the vehicle. The deceased were identified as Gaurav Singh (28), son of Subedar Major Satyawan, his brother Rajan Chaudhary (35), nephew Ram Samujh Singh (40), and ambulance driver Jaspal (30).
Gaurav Singh and Jaspal died on the spot, while Rajan Chaudhary and Ram Samujh Singh succumbed to their injuries during treatment at a hospital in Pithla-Kumarganj in Ayodhya district, police said.
The four were accompanying the remains of Satyawan, a resident of Galiya Dudhailla village in Rudrapur area of Deoria district.
Police took the bodies into custody and sent them for post-mortem examination. The families of the deceased have been informed.
The remains of Subedar Major Satyawan have been kept at the Haliyapur police station premises pending further arrangements.
