Kolkata, Sept. 25 -- A Field Junior Engineer attached to the Uluberia Municipality was arrested on Friday by the cops of the Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) while accepting bribes.
According to sources, the junior engineer had allegedly demanded a total bribe of Rs 50,000 from a local contractor to clear a pending tender. Refusing to comply with the extortion, the contractor approached the ACB and filed a complaint, prompting the agency to plan a secret operation. Investigations revealed a modern digital trail to corruption. The bank records indicate that the complainant had already transferred an initial instalment of Rs 10,000 via UPI on September 23.
Accordingly, the trap was set on Friday when the engineer agreed to meet the contractor to collect the remaining balance. ACB officials positioned discreetly around the place inside the municipality premises and moved in immediately as soon as the engineer accepted Rs 20,000 cash.
The tainted currency was recovered from his possession on the spot. A quick wash of his hands proved that the suspect handled the marked currency notes.
Senior officials confirmed that the accused has been booked under relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
