Kolkata, Sept. 29 -- The Birbhum District Police has arrested two persons in connection with the murder of the BJP leader Chandan Bhalla in Bolpur.

The suspects, identified as Sheikh Anarul and Dipankar Roy were apprehended from the outskirts of Bolpur late on Monday night.

Bhalla, a BJP booth president who also worked as a clerk at the local land registry office, was shot dead at point-blank range by bike-borne miscreants on Sunday evening near the Motipukur area. According to sources, the preliminary investigations point toward a personal dispute over local land deals rather than political animosity. The arrested duo were reportedly involved in the local land-dealing business. It is suspected that the murder is an outcome of a financial fallout over a specific land deal. Bhalla was shot dead by two masked assailants on Sunday at the busy Motipukur rice mill area under ward 12 of Bolpur Municipality.

While Anarul and Roy are believed to be the local conspirators who orchestrated the plot, a massive manhunt has been launched by the police to track down the contract killers who executed the shooting. Police are currently analyzing CCTV footage and mobile tower dumps from the crime scene.
