Kolkata, Aug. 5 -- Two BJP leaders were arrested by the police in connection with two separate incidents of extortion and attempt to rape in Jamuria of West Burdwan and Duttapukur of North 24-Parganas.
According to sources, Jamuria police registered a suo motu case and arrested BJP leader Rakesh Maji after a viral video allegedly showed him stopping sand-laden trucks and demanding Rs 200 from each driver. The authenticity of the video could not be independently verified by Millennium Post.
In the viral video, Maji is purportedly heard saying that during the TMC regime he used to collect Rs 500 from each overloaded truck, but was now demanding a lower amount as the present government was strictly enforcing the law.
Following the video's circulation, police registered a case and arrested him. State Cabinet minister Agnimitra Paul directed the police to take stringent action against the accused.
Meanwhile, in Duttapukur, a local BJP leader Shyamal Saha was arrested for allegedly attempting to rape a housewife in Kadambagachhi area on Monday night.
Family members and neighbours of the victim woman caught Saha after hearing her screaming.
The BJP leader was reportedly manhandled before the cops intervened and took him into custody.
