
Siliguri, May 25 -- Police arrested two individuals for allegedly making objectionable remarks on social media targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his late mother. The accused, identified as Munna Singh and Jiban Das from Debiganj under Binnabari Panchayat in Kharibari, were arrested following complaints lodged by BJP leaders over a viral video containing the alleged comments.
According to sources, the video spread rapidly on social media, prompting outrage among BJP supporters. BJP leaders, including district secretary Anil Kumar Roy, demanded strict action. Based on the complaint, police launched an investigation and produced the accused before the Siliguri Sub-Divisional Court on Monday.
In a separate incident, five persons were arrested after allegedly attacking police personnel during a raid against illegal activities near BPCL Road adjacent to IOC under NJP Police Station on Sunday night. The arrested accused have been identified as Govinda Roy, Ashish Shah, Amit Roy, Babu Roy, and Basudev Sarkar.
Police sources said a team conducting a raid found around 10 to 12 individuals engaged in unlawful activities. While several fled, five were detained. During questioning, the accused allegedly attacked officers, leaving Assistant Sub-Inspector Munna Ahmed injured. He was taken to Siliguri District Hospital for treatment. The accused were later produced before the Jalpaiguri court. Meanwhile, tension gripped Siliguri College on Monday following a clash between TMCP and ABVP supporters over the setting up of admission help desks. The confrontation reportedly escalated into violence, leaving TMCP leader Vivek Jha seriously injured and hospitalised.
TMCP alleged ABVP workers vandalised their help desk and attacked members, while ABVP denied the accusations, claiming the clash resulted from internal disputes within TMCP. ABVP also alleged that TMCP members misbehaved with their female members which triggered the clash. Police intervened, dispersed the crowd, and initiated an investigation by examining CCTV footage. Additional police deployment remains in place to prevent further unrest.
