Cooch Behar, Oct. 22 -- Seven municipal workers were injured when an idol overturned during immersion in the Raidak River in Tufanganj on Wednesday. The injured were rushed to Tufanganj Subdivisional Hospital, where they received treatment before being discharged.
The incident occurred while an idol belonging to a local club was being immersed amid security arrangements. The idol suddenly overturned, trapping several municipal workers engaged in the immersion and triggering a commotion in the area.
BJP leader Utpal Das said: "The idol lost its balance during the immersion and overturned. However, no one suffered any serious injuries. They received primary treatment at the hospital and were subsequently discharged."
Meanwhile, Mathabhanga witnessed the revival of boat-based idol immersion in the Sutunga River on Wednesday after a gap of nearly a decade. The grand ceremony was organised on the initiative of Mathabhanga MLA and North Bengal Development minister Nisith Pramanik.
A large number of people gathered along both banks of the river to witness the event. A gallery was erected for spectators, while boats were elaborately decorated for the occasion. The idol was taken onto the river in a decorated boat before the immersion was performed.
Police personnel and Central forces were deployed to maintain security and prevent any untoward incidents.
The boat-based immersion was a traditional feature of celebrations in Mathabhanga but was discontinued around 10 years ago during the previous government's tenure.
