Noida, Nov. 3 -- A one-and-a-half-year-old boy was killed after being run over by a mini-truck delivering RO water bottles in Shahdara village of Sector 141 on Tuesday morning. The driver allegedly abandoned the vehicle and fled after the incident.

The accident occurred around 10.20am in a narrow lane near a T-junction, just a few metres from the child's house. The toddler was playing outside his rented accommodation when the mini-truck, which was carrying water bottles, began reversing through the lane.

Police said the child suddenly came in the vehicle's path while it was backing up. The driver allegedly failed to spot him in time, and the truck's rear wheels crushed the toddler, causing severe head injuries.

The child's mother, who was inside the house doing household chores, rushed outside after hearing about the accident. His father was away at work when the incident took place. The family, originally from Bihar, was living in the village on rent.

"By the time the driver noticed the child and could stop the vehicle, its rear wheel had run over the boy, leaving him with grievous head injuries," a police officer associated with the investigation said.

The family and local residents alerted the police through the emergency helpline 112. The child was immediately taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.

Police said the driver fled after realising that the child had been crushed under the vehicle, leaving the mini-truck behind. The vehicle has been seized and efforts are being made to identify and trace the driver.

A case is being registered at Sector 142 police station on the basis of a complaint lodged by the family. Police said the driver would be booked under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for causing death by negligence and rash driving.
