Kolkata, Aug. 30 -- The Calcutta High Court has disposed of two petitions over alleged illegal construction and rooftop use at Tobacco House after the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) informed the court that its proceedings had reached finality.
Justice Raja Basu Chowdhury took on record KMC's August 21 order in the demolition proceedings and left the aggrieved party to pursue the statutory remedy available under law.
The dispute concerns 1, Old Court House Corner, Hare Street, popularly known as Tobacco House. One petition challenged a KMC notice issued under Section 401 of the KMC Act on August 26, 2025, while the other complained of illegal construction at the premises.
A petitioner claiming to be a co-owner said he had complained to KMC about a change in the use of the roof. The rooftop had been developed with artificial turf for sports activities and was ordinarily let out for cricket, football and other sporting activities. The petitioner challenging KMC action said a leave-and-licence arrangement had been obtained to explore the rooftop for commercial purposes.
