Cooch Behar, Aug. 27 -- Dinhata police arrested Amir Alam, a Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) leader and an alleged close associate of former state minister Udayan Guha, from outside his residence in Ward 16 of Dinhata town on Wednesday night.
According to police sources, a case was registered against Alam under the Arms Act on Thursday. He was subsequently produced before the Dinhata Sub-Divisional Court, which remanded him to five days in police custody after the hearing. The arrest has triggered political reactions in the area.
Police sources said Alam had been absconding since the announcement of the 2026 Assembly election results. Acting on confidential information that he had returned home, police conducted a raid and arrested him near his residence.
Alam had faced several allegations during the previous Trinamool Congress regime. BJP Dinhata MLA Ajay Roy targeted Udayan Guha following the arrest. "Their Gurudev is currently in jail. Therefore, those who have tortured people on his orders and under his power will not be spared," Roy said.
The Trinamool Congress has yet to issue a reaction to the arrest.
