Kolkata, April 19 -- The Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Sunday issued a strong rebuttal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of making "misleading" statements following the political controversy around the Women's Reservation Bill and delimitation.
Addressing a press conference at Trinamool Bhavan, senior leaders, including Shashi Panja, Mahua Moitra and Pratima Mondal said the BJP was attempting to "confuse people" by linking the delimitation exercise with women's reservation. They argued that the Centre's narrative was an attempt to cover up its failure in Parliament, where the bill could not be successfully advanced. The TMC leaders alleged that the Prime Minister was now trying to shift the political narrative by invoking women's empowerment, despite what they described as a lack of concrete action. They also pointed out that the Women's Reservation Bill had already been passed years ago but had not been implemented, questioning the delay and the Centre's intent.
Mahua Moitra further accused the Prime Minister of attacking opposition parties using "false claims" after facing setbacks in Parliament. She clarified that there is no direct connection between delimitation and women's reservation, calling the government's position misleading.
Meanwhile, TMC highlighted its own record on women's representation, claiming that the party has consistently ensured higher participation of women in Parliament. The party asserted that it does not require lessons on women's empowerment from the BJP and accused the Prime Minister of attempting to mislead voters ahead of upcoming political developments.
