Kolkata, May 12 -- The Trinamool Congress on Tuesday questioned the accountability of the BJP-led Central government over the NEET question paper leak and the subsequent re-examination process. "Lakhs of students' lives have been affected because of them," the party said after the National Testing Agency (NTA) announced the cancellation of the NEET-UG examination held on May 3.

Amid allegations of a question paper leak, the Central government has asked the CBI to conduct a comprehensive inquiry into the alleged "irregularities" in the examination process.

Leader of Opposition Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay questioned the competency of the Centre, saying, "They lectured Bengal on its education system, yet failed to conduct a national examination properly. They have made the future of lakhs of students uncertain. The Centre should apologise."

Senior TMC leader Mahua Moitra referred to previous controversies surrounding national examinations and said, "Almost 100 paper leaks and 50 re-examinations have taken place in the past decade of Modi Raj."

TMC Rajya Sabha MP Sagarika Ghose also raised questions over the functioning of the National Testing Agency. "In 2014, I had written to Education minister Dharmendra Pradhan seeking details about the NTA- who its members are and why annual reports are not published. If you visit the NTA website, you will not find this information. There is no transparency or accountability in the NTA. It is a total collapse of the system," she said.
