Siliguri, Aug. 25 -- Siliguri Police have arrested a Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader for allegedly making objectionable posts against West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on social media. The arrested person has been identified as Debashis Dey, a resident of Ward 25 in Siliguri.
According to police sources, during routine social media monitoring on Monday, officials came across multiple allegedly objectionable posts concerning the Chief Minister on Dey's social media profile. Following this, a team from Siliguri Police Station reached his residence.
Police alleged that Dey was asked to remove the posts, but he refused to do so.
An argument reportedly broke out between the police and the TMC leader, following which police registered a suo moto case against him and brought him to the police station. Dey was produced before the Siliguri Sub-Divisional Court on Tuesday.
However, Dey has denied the allegations, claiming that he had not made any objectionable posts. He said his social media posts were made in response to statements made by the Chief Minister.
"If this is the case, then there is no freedom of speech left," Dey reportedly said. Police have launched an investigation into the matter.
