Kolkata, April 15 -- "Why this selective witch-hunt?" - stated the Trinamool Congress as the controversy unfolded.

During a naka checking operation in the Diamond Harbour-Magrahat area of South 24-Parganas, police intercepted a vehicle and recovered approximately Rs 9.88 lakh in cash. Two BJP leaders travelling in the car were detained after allegedly failing to produce valid documents to justify the source of the money.

The amount has since been seized and an investigation is underway to determine whether it was intended to influence voters, in violation of the MCC.

Seizing on the development, the TMC sharpened its attack on the EC, alleging a pattern of selective enforcement. The party claimed that while its leaders and even their protectees are being subjected to "intrusive checks," instances involving BJP leaders are not met with the same

level of scrutiny.

Referring to the incident, the TMC questioned the apparent disparity and suggested that such actions point to a biased approach by the poll body.

The ruling party further argued that the lack of uniform action undermines the credibility of the electoral process, reiterating its charge that central agencies and authorities are being used in a partisan manner during the crucial pre-poll period.
