Jalpaiguri, Aug. 31 -- Trinamool Congress councillors loyal to Mamata Banerjee have moved the Calcutta High Court challenging the appointment of an administrator to the Jalpaiguri Municipality, alleging that the process was "undemocratic" and violated established rules.
The development came as Jalpaiguri Sadar Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) Moin Ahmed assumed charge as the municipality's administrator on Monday.
TMC councillor and Mamata Banerjee loyalist Tapan Banerjee alleged that the administrator was appointed before the no-confidence process against the municipality chairman could be completed.
"An administrator has been appointed in an undemocratic manner even before the no-confidence process against the chairman Saikat Chatterjee could be completed. We have filed a writ petition in the High Court opposing the government's hasty decision. We hope the case will be heard at the Jalpaiguri Circuit Bench this week. We have full faith in the law," Banerjee said.
After taking charge, Ahmed said his priority would be to ensure that civic services reach residents at their doorstep.
