Kolkata, Aug. 5 -- A TMC office in Kolkata's Kalighat became the centre of a political controversy after outgoing councillor Prabir Mukhopadhyay filed a police complaint alleging that a group of around 200 people attacked the party office at 42, Sadananda Road in Ward 83 on Tuesday evening.
Mukhopadhyay alleged that the attackers vandalised the office and threatened party workers with firearms, warning them against using the premises in the future.
Following the incident, TMC leaders, including MLAs Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay, Baishwanar Chattopadhyay and Srideep Das, visited the area and lodged a complaint with the Kalighat Police station. TMC leader Kunal Ghosh accused the BJP of orchestrating the attack and said: "If this can happen in Kalighat in the evening, imagine what is happening across Bengal," while questioning whether BJP leaders were noticing such incidents. The BJP strongly rejected the allegation. State BJP chief spokesperson Debjit Sarkar called the accusation "baseless, false and malicious" and claimed the party had no connection with the incident.Sharing a Kolkata Municipal Corporation notice, he alleged that the structure had been illegally constructed and that action was being taken by the civic body after a complaint by the property's legal owner.
A senior police officer said a case had been registered and an inquiry was underway. The officer added that the office had been sealed due to a civic issue. Mpost
