Darjeeling, July 5 -- Bharatiya Gorkha Prajatantrik Morcha (BGPM) president Anit Thapa has called for greater unity among Gorkhas and urged young people to work towards strengthening ethnic solidarity. He stated that the time is conducive to fulfilling the long-standing aspiration of the Gorkhas.
Addressing a convention organised by the Bharatiya Gorkha Prajatantrik Yuva Shakti (BGPYS) in Kurseong, Thapa invoked late Subash Ghising's slogan, "The community is more important than the party, and land is more important than the community," saying it should once again resonate across the Darjeeling Hills.
Referring to his decision to step down from office, Thapa said it was the "need of the hour." He prophesied that the possibility of a permanent political solution for the Gorkhas exists, but stressed that internal unity remains the biggest challenge.
"This is not the time for a show of strength but for coming together," he said. Reaffirming the BGPM's commitment to peaceful politics, Thapa rejected the path of violent agitation. "We will not even think of violent movements. BGPM will always pursue constructive politics and never the politics of destruction," he said.
BGPM Yuva Shakti Kurseong sub-divisional general secretary Brigen Mishra said the present time demands leaders who can endure hardships for the welfare of people rather than divide the community for petty political gains.
The convention concluded with a decision to intensify public awareness campaigns and formulate future organisational strategies centred on unity and constructive engagement.
