New Delhi, Sept. 2 -- Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing the environment in which young Indians will study, work and make decisions. The preparation of revised NCERT textbooks for Classes 10 to 12 therefore comes at an important moment. Schools cannot remain insulated from technologies that students are already encountering through search engines, writing assistants, image generators and educational platforms. Introducing AI concepts into the curriculum can help pupils understand the systems increasingly shaping their world. But adding a chapter on artificial intelligence will not, by itself, make education ready for the AI age. The more fundamental challenge is to decide what students should be capable of doing when machines can instantly generate essays, solve problems, summarise information and imitate human creativity. Education must consequently move from merely providing information towards strengthening judgement.

That begins with verification. Generative AI can produce convincing answers that are incomplete, misleading or simply wrong. Students accustomed to accepting polished responses without questioning their accuracy could become more informed in appearance while becoming less capable of independent thought. Schools must therefore teach pupils how to interrogate sources, distinguish evidence from assertion, identify bias and compare machine-generated claims with reliable information. These abilities were important before AI; they are indispensable now. Classroom assignments should evolve accordingly. If an essay can be produced in seconds, assessment cannot depend exclusively on the finished essay. Teachers can increasingly examine how students reached conclusions, which evidence they selected, how they defended arguments and whether they can recognise weaknesses in an AI-generated response.

Responsible use must form another pillar of AI education. Students need to understand privacy, plagiarism, copyright, algorithmic bias and the consequences of uploading personal or confidential information to digital platforms. They should also learn that using AI as an assistant is different from surrendering intellectual effort to it. Blanket bans are unlikely to work when these tools are becoming embedded across professional life. Equally, unrestricted use risks turning technology into a substitute for learning. Schools need clear age-appropriate rules defining when AI can support research, brainstorming or experimentation and when students must demonstrate their own knowledge. Teachers themselves will require sustained training, because no curriculum can succeed if educators are expected to supervise technologies they have not been adequately prepared to understand.

India must also guard against allowing AI education to deepen existing inequalities. A student in a well-equipped urban school may have access to sophisticated tools, reliable connectivity and trained teachers, while another may struggle with basic digital infrastructure. AI literacy cannot become another advantage determined by geography or income. Public schools require connectivity, devices, teacher support and accessible learning resources alongside revised textbooks. Ultimately, preparing children for an AI-driven economy is not about teaching them to compete with machines at tasks machines perform efficiently. It is about developing qualities technology cannot replace easily: curiosity, reasoning, creativity, ethical judgement and the ability to ask better questions. The strongest education system will not produce students who merely know how to use AI. It will produce students who know when to trust it, when to challenge it and when to think for themselves.
