Malda, Oct. 5 -- A school teacher was allegedly caught in an objectionable situation with a minor female student inside a private school in Harishchandrapur on Monday morning, triggering tension in the area. Local residents reportedly assaulted the teacher before police intervened and took both the teacher and the student away.

According to local residents, the teacher had allegedly been entering the school premises with the student outside regular school hours, including early mornings and afternoons. They claimed that the duo would enter the premises when the school was mostly deserted and allegedly lock the door from inside.

Residents said their suspicions grew after repeatedly noticing the teacher and the student entering the school during unusual hours. On Monday also locals saw them enter. They claimed that the teacher and the minor student were found in an objectionable situation inside the premises.

The incident quickly drew a crowd, with angry residents accusing the teacher of seriously compromising the sanctity and safety of the educational institution. The teacher was allegedly beaten by some locals. Even as police personnel arrived and attempted to rescue him, residents reportedly protested, leading to a tense situation.

"We had noticed them entering the school at unusual hours several times. The matter raised serious suspicion among the residents. We want strict action if the allegations are proved," said local resident Phoolkumar Das. Police subsequently brought the teacher and the student out of the school premises and started an inquiry. The exact nature of their relationship and the circumstances surrounding their presence inside the school are yet to be established officially.

Headmistress Anjana Roy said, "I don't know what exactly happened but we'll conduct an inquiry into the matter and take appropriate actions."
