New Delhi, Sept. 12 -- Surendranath Law College vice-principal Mohammad Tarannum, who submitted her resignation on Friday after being gheraoed by students for around 23 hours over attendance requirements for semester examinations, on Saturday claimed that she was forced to step down and will return to the college on Monday.
Tarannum said she was forced to submit her resignation letter on September 11. She said she sent a counter-email within 15 minutes of leaving the college, informing the authorities that she had been forced to resign.
"I will come to the college as usual on Monday and enter my room to discharge my responsibilities," Tarannum said. She said she would arrange special classes for students with low attendance and approach the university seeking permission for them to appear in the examinations after attending the additional classes. "There is no question of my resigning," she said, claiming that she would have been killed had she refused to submit her resignation.
The dispute began after the college set 75 per cent attendance as the exam eligibility criterion. Following protests during form filling, the proposed relaxation was revised, with students ultimately required to have at least 40 per cent attendance.The agitating students have claimed that around 600 of the college's nearly 900 students could be barred from appearing for the examinations if the attendance requirement is strictly enforced.
