New Delhi, Oct. 16 -- A standoff broke out between supporters of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and protesters demanding his resignation outside Palika Bazar near Connaught Place on Friday, as both groups gathered with the Tricolour.

The gathering followed a call by Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke to hoist the national flag at Central Park and mobilise more people. Some protesters later marched around the park carrying the Tricolour, while others remained near Palika Bazar, where Kumar's supporters chanted slogans in praise of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The protesters accused the Election Commission of deleting their names and those of their family members from electoral rolls during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise.

Suhana Khan, 23, a Delhi-born protester, alleged that a woman police officer had assaulted her inside a detention bus. She said she was prepared to continue the agitation for months or even years to press for Kumar's resignation.

Another protester, Rahul Sharma, 24, said his grandparents' names had also been deleted from the electoral rolls.
