New Delhi, Sept. 12 -- A lawyer representing Sumit Roy, personal assistant to Abhishek Banerjee, who was remanded in eight days' police custody by a West Midnapore court on Friday, met him on Saturday and said rumours that Roy had confessed to crimes related to the Salboni land fraud case were completely false.
Since the court granted permission for his lawyer to meet Roy once daily while in police custody, the lawyer met Roy and asked if
he had confessed to any crimes, given the ongoing rumours. The lawyer claimed Roy stated he did not confess to any crime and that the rumours were completely false.
Roy has been charged in connection with an alleged land fraud case registered at Salboni police station. Following the change of guard in Bengal, former Trinamool MLA Sujay Hazra was arrested in
connection with the case. Hazra's questioning led investigators to a trail of money that passed through several hands and eventually led them to Roy. Investigators allege that government land was illegally converted, forged documents were prepared and the properties were sold to various individuals at inflated prices. Roy was arrested on Thursday from the party office in Kalighat.
