Kolkata, May 13 -- Former Bishnupur Lok Sabha TMC candidate Sujata Mondal on Wednesday announced her resignation from all party and government posts, formally severing ties with the Trinamool Congress in Bankura.
Addressing a press conference outside the Bankura Zilla Parishad office, Sujata said she could no longer continue in politics by "compromising with her conscience." She claimed that her "conscience had started troubling" her since the R.G.Kar incident, and as a woman, she had gone through prolonged mental distress over several developments in recent months.
Sujata, who had earlier switched from the BJP to the Trinamool amid her public fallout with BJP MP Saumitra Khan, said she had wanted to step away earlier but family circumstances prevented her from doing so. She also surrendered her security cover and declared that from now on she wished to live as an "ordinary citizen."
Though political circles are speculating over her next move, Sujata denied any immediate plans to join another party.
