New Delhi, Sept. 9 -- Planning to study in Canada? Well, be prepared to spend more. Following stricter visa entry rules, Canada has introduced several changes to its international student programme in 2026, which will increase the financial burden on international students. The changes will come into effect on September 1, 2026, according to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). According to IRCC, a single study permit applicant outside Quebec must now show access to at least C$23,448 (Rs 16,11,276) to cover living expenses during the first year of study. Previously, applicants were required to demonstrate access to C$22,895 (Rs 15,69,825). The latest revision raises the requirement by C$553 (Rs 37,917). Students enrolling in programmes lasting more than one year must also explain how they intend to finance the remaining period of their studies.
The financial requirement increases further for students travelling with family members. International students should also note that demonstrating access to C$23,448 alone is not enough to meet Canada's overall financial requirements. The amount covers living expenses only. Applicants must separately prove that they have sufficient funds to pay for tuition fees and transportation costs.
