Kolkata, July 26 -- The Bengal government will, for the first time this year, observe the Har Ghar Tiranga (HGT) campaign across the state from August 9 to 17 with the objective of promoting patriotism, strengthening national unity and encouraging citizens to proudly display the national flag.

The move follows a communication from Vivek Agarwal, Secretary, Union Ministry of Culture, to the Bengal Chief Secretary, requesting the state to participate in the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign.

The campaign was successfully implemented, particularly in BJP-ruled states, during 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025, with the national flag being prominently hoisted across homes, offices, institutions and public spaces nationwide on Independence Day.

Saumitra Mohan, Secretary of the state Information and Cultural Affairs (I&CA) Department, has written to the district magistrates and the Commissioner of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation to undertake a comprehensive programme in their respective jurisdictions and all subordinate offices under their aegis, involving all government departments, Panchayati Raj Institutions, urban local bodies, educational institutions, cultural organisations, youth organisations, NGOs, voluntary organisations, business organisations and the general public.

The activities to be undertaken at the district, subdivision, block and municipal levels include rallies and prabhat pheris carrying the national flag, as well as cycle and e-bike rallies with the Tricolour.

Schools and educational institutions may be encouraged to decorate campus walls with Tiranga-themed artwork, quotations from freedom fighters and excerpts from the national song Vande Mataram. Government offices, heritage buildings, prominent public buildings, bus termini, ferry ghats and marketplaces may also be illuminated with Tiranga-themed lighting throughout the campaign period.

The campaign also advocates the creation of large Tiranga-themed rangolis at prominent public places with high footfall, encouraging the mass singing of the national song Vande Mataram and other patriotic songs at government offices, educational institutions and public venues, and organising Tiranga exhibitions, curated by the Union Ministry of Culture, depicting the evolution, history and significance of the national flag.

Mohan has asked the authorities to make arrangements for cultural programmes, seminars, lectures, essays, quizzes, painting and drawing competitions, and other awareness activities focusing on India's freedom movement and national integration. He has also requested extensive publicity through banners, posters and digital creatives. Eminent personalities from the fields of culture and sports should be roped in for the campaign.

The national flags will be supplied centrally, while the state I&CA Department will allocate funds separately for each district, subdivision, municipal corporation and municipality.

Directions have also been issued to prepare a consolidated report on participation, photographs, selfies with the Tiranga and video documentation, and submit the same to the department after completion of the campaign.
