Kolkata, Aug. 4 -- St. Xavier's University, Kolkata, on Tuesday formally inaugurated the undergraduate programmes of the Xavier School of Engineering and Technology (XSET), marking the university's expansion into engineering education.
The inaugural ceremony was held at Fr. Albert Huart Hall, Arrupe Building, in the presence of academicians, university officials, faculty members, students, parents and invited guests. The programme began with a prayer video, followed by a reading from Rabindranath Tagore's Gitanjali and the ceremonial lighting of the lamp.
Vice-Chancellor Rev. Dr John Felix Raj, S.J., welcomed the gathering and felicitated the chief guest, Dr Suman Chakraborty, Director, IIT Kharagpur. In his address, Rev. Dr Raj highlighted the university's commitment to developing technically skilled, ethically responsible and socially conscious engineers who can contribute to national development.
Delivering the keynote address, Dr Chakraborty urged students to focus on innovation, interdisciplinary learning and research-based education. He emphasised the role of engineering in addressing global challenges and encouraged students to become responsible professionals committed to technological advancement and social welfare.
Registrar Rev. Dr Xavier Jeyaraj, S.J., briefed students and parents about the university's academic regulations, institutional values and expectations from the new batch. XSET has commenced its first academic session with B.Tech programmes in Computer Science and Engineering, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Electronics and Communication Engineering, and Information Technology. More than 250 students have enrolled across the four programmes.
