Kolkata, Oct. 28 -- Sumit Roy, former personal assistant to MAITC MP Abhishek Banerjee, was formally shown arrested by Diamond Harbour District Police on Wednesday in a soil-theft case.
Roy, who is already in custody following his arrest by the state Criminal Investigation Department (CID), was brought from Salboni to Alipore Court under tight security. Police moved a petition seeking to show him arrested in the ongoing investigation, which the court allowed. According to police sources, the case concerns the alleged illegal extraction and theft of soil within the jurisdiction of Kalitala Ashuti Police Station in the Diamond Harbour Police District.
Roy's defence counsel opposed the police plea and moved a bail petition, arguing that the charges were politically motivated and part of a series of legal actions aimed at keeping him behind bars.
The CID had arrested Roy from Banerjee's Kalighat office on September 10, after the Supreme Court rejected his anticipatory bail plea in a separate land-grabbing and land-fraud case relating to the Salboni and Jhargram areas.
