Kolkata, June 29 -- Signs of political turbulence have now reached the panchayat level after developments in municipal bodies, with six TMC Panchayat chiefs in Bongaon submitting their resignation letters together in what is being described as a mass resignation.

The resignation letters were submitted to the Block Development Officer (BDO) on Monday. Those who stepped down include the chiefs of Chhoygharia, Ganganandapur, Akaipur, Gopalpur I, Gopalpur II and Dharmapukuria Gram Panchayats.

One of the outgoing panchayat chiefs, Sabita Sarkar, said the resignations were submitted due to personal reasons. "All of us have resigned for personal reasons. At this moment, I do not wish to say anything more," she said.

According to sources, the reasons mentioned in the resignation letters vary. While some cited personal grounds, others stated that it had become difficult to continue functioning under the changed circumstances.

Reacting to the development, Bongaon BJP organisational district president Bikash Ghosh alleged that all those who resigned had been involved in corruption. He claimed that after the BJP came to power and investigations began, they stepped down out of fear.
