Cooch Behar, Aug. 31 -- In a major crackdown on illegal cannabis cultivation, Sitai police have launched drone-assisted surveillance in river basin areas to identify and destroy cannabis plantations. The special operation was conducted on Monday in the Singimari river basin near Takimari under Sitai police station.
According to police sources, a team reached the river basin area by boat and used drones to conduct aerial surveillance of the surrounding land. Several plots allegedly being used for illegal cannabis cultivation were identified during the operation. Police subsequently reached the identified locations and destroyed the cannabis plants.
No arrests have been made in connection with the operation so far. Despite repeated appeals from the administration against the cultivation of cannabis, some individuals are allegedly continuing the illegal practice in the hope of making quick profits. Taking a strict stance against such activities, Sitai police have intensified their efforts to identify and eliminate illegal cannabis plantations in the area.
Police said the crackdown will continue in the coming days. Surveillance will also be strengthened across vulnerable areas, particularly river basins and other remote locations.
