Siliguri, Sept. 20 -- Promoting environmental conservation and spreading awareness about the importance of a greener and cleaner environment, Siliguri Institute of Technology (SIT) organised a 10-km 'Run for Green Siliguri' on Saturday.
The event began at 6:00 am from Baghajatin Park and concluded at the SIT campus, with students, teachers and participants from different sections of society taking part enthusiastically.
The run was flagged off by Jose Marcio Ramirez Barreto, legendary footballer of Mohun Bagan AC. Several distinguished personalities attended the event, including Darjeeling District Youth Icon Deepankar Arora, sports enthusiast Arindam Banerjee, Baghajatin Athletic Club Vice President Sibnath Ganguly, SIT Principal Dr Joydeep Dutta, SIT Vice Principal Dr Arundhati Chakrabarti and SIT Diploma College Principal-in-Charge Anindya Basu.
The initiative aimed to encourage public participation in environmental protection while highlighting the importance of tree plantation, pollution control and preserving natural resources.
The event also featured competitive performances in the men's and women's categories. In the men's category, Mukesh Kumar secured first place with a timing of 28:45.82 minutes, followed by Arjun Tudu, who finished second in 29:52.86 minutes. Suraj Kumar Paul secured third place with a timing of 30:22.52 minutes. In the women's category, Soni Devi emerged as the winner with a timing of 37:53.00 minutes.
