Siliguri, Sept. 14 -- The Matigara police have arrested the prime accused of the fake call centre racket, which was recently busted at Webel IT Park, Siliguri. The accused, identified as Saikat Sinha Roy, was arrested from Kolkata and brought to Siliguri for further investigation.
According to police, a special team of the Siliguri Metropolitan Police recently conducted raids at Phase I, Phase II and Phase III of the Webel IT Park in Matigara, uncovering an alleged fake call centre involved in defrauding foreign nationals. Nine people were arrested in two separate operations.
Police said Saikat, who allegedly introduced himself as the director of the call centre, was operating the racket from Kolkata. He reportedly rented a house in the Sodepur area and controlled the operations from there. Police further claimed that Saikat occasionally travelled to Siliguri to brief employees and give them specific instructions or "scripts" at room G-14 of the IT Park. He often changed both the call centre premises and his rented accommodation to evade detection.
Of the nine people arrested initially, seven were subsequently granted bail, while two others were taken into five-day police custody for questioning. During interrogation, police learnt about Saikat's involvement in the racket.
A special team from Matigara police subsequently travelled to Kolkata and arrested him. He was produced before the Siliguri Sub-Divisional Court on Monday.
