New Delhi, Aug. 17 -- BJP leader Shehzad Poonawalla has once again sought acceptance of his resignation from the party, after his earlier request to step down was rejected. In a fresh letter shared on Monday, Poonawalla said he had reconsidered the decision at the party's request but, after "long and hard contemplation", had reached a final decision to leave his position as national spokesperson and give up his active primary membership of the BJP.
Poonawalla had first submitted his resignation on July 30, offering to relinquish all party positions and his primary membership. The party had declined to accept it at the time and asked him to reconsider his decision. Explaining his decision, Poonawalla cited pressing financial and personal circumstances and said he needed to move towards the private sector. He also referred to developments involving certain individuals in recent days, saying they had reinforced his decision to step away from the party. In his latest communication, Poonawalla expressed gratitude and respect for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP president Nitin Nabin and senior party leaders, including Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh and B L Santosh. The development comes weeks after Poonawalla removed references to the BJP from his social media profile, further fuelling speculation about his future in active politics. He had joined the BJP after leaving the Congress in 2017 and was subsequently appointed as a national spokesperson.
