Kolkata, Oct. 11 -- Several students were injured in a clash during an AIDSO rally and conference in Bajkul, East Midnapore, on Sunday. The Left student organisation accused BJP and ABVP supporters of attacking its members and vandalising the conference venue and a vehicle.
AIDSO had organised a rally demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, followed by a conference. According to the organisation, its members were marching towards the conference venue when the alleged attack took place. The venue was also allegedly vandalised, triggering tension in the area and at Bajkul College. Bhagabanpur MLA and minister Santanu Pramanik denied the BJP's involvement.
"Bad remarks were being made during the rally. ABVP members may have responded to them. There could have been some altercation over this. The BJP has no involvement in the matter," Pramanik said.
"If any wrongdoing has taken place, the police will conduct an impartial investigation and take action. We will not interfere in the matter," he said.
A large police force was deployed to bring the situation under control.
