Guwahati, Oct. 15 -- Union Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth on Thursday called for time-bound and coordinated efforts by the Centre and state governments to expand the National Cadet Corps (NCC), stressing its role in developing disciplined, skilled and responsible youth.

Addressing the Special Joint State Representatives and Additional Director General's Conference 2026 under the NCC's North Eastern Region Directorate, Seth urged greater participation of girls to prepare them for future leadership roles. The meeting covered the eight northeastern states and West Bengal.

He said NCC expansion was a priority for the Narendra Modi government and stressed that the objective should be to provide meaningful opportunities for character building and nation-building, rather than merely increasing enrolment.

Seth called on state governments to address manpower shortages and provide the necessary administrative and financial support. He particularly referred to budgetary requirements in West Bengal and expressed confidence that the new state government would extend the required assistance.
