Kolkata, May 25 -- Senior advocate Phiroze Edulji passed away on Monday at a private hospital in Kolkata. He had been suffering from multiple age-related ailments, including liver complications.
One of the senior-most practitioners at the Calcutta High Court, Edulji had been practising there since 1997. An alumnus of the National Law School of India University, he had argued several high-profile cases during his long legal career.
In recent months, Edulji had prominently represented the family of the victim in the RG Kar rape and murder case, strongly arguing on their behalf before the courts. He had also approached the Supreme Court of India seeking justice for the victim's family. With fresh proceedings in the case having resumed before the High Court, his demise is being seen as a major setback.
Apart from the RG Kar case, Edulji had appeared in several other sensitive matters, including the Bogtui massacre and the Kamduni gang rape case.
He had also represented the Enforcement Directorate in multiple cases, including the school recruitment corruption investigation in West Bengal.
