New Delhi, Oct. 3 -- Sealdah Railway Station is set to get a recreation zone with a multiplex, game zone, food court, retail outlets and sleeping pods, with Eastern Railway awarding a contract for the development, operation and maintenance of the facility.

The recreation zone will come up across three upper floors and a terrace. The ground floor, which has already been developed by the Railways, will remain outside the licensed area.

The facility will have shops selling grocery and daily-use products, apparel and accessories, electronics, cafeterias and food courts. Eastern Railway said outlets of national and international food brands that are not currently available at the station would also be brought in. A game zone and multiplex will provide entertainment options, while sleeping pods will offer passengers paid short-term accommodation.

The contract is scheduled to commence on September 15, 2027. The project is being developed through a public-private arrangement, under which Eastern Railway will not have to incur the capital expenditure required for the construction, operation and maintenance of the facility.

The project is also expected to create direct and indirect employment in retail, food and beverages, housekeeping, security, maintenance and other allied services.

Sealdah Divisional Railway Manager Rajeev Saxena said the project would bring shopping, dining, entertainment and accommodation facilities together at the station.
