Kolkata, Oct. 26 -- The Supreme Court will reportedly hear this week Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool's petition challenging Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar's appointment and several decisions taken by the Election Commission under his leadership.
Senior advocate Menaka Guruswamy, appearing for the Mamata Banerjee-led party, sought an early hearing before Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant's bench on Monday. The court said the petition would be heard alongside a separate case concerning the SIR of electoral rolls in Bengal.
Filed by MAITC MP Dola Sen against the Union government, the petition questions the Election Commission's functioning, the CEC's decision-making process and the consequences of alleged violations of the law.
The other two election commissioners, Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, have also been made parties to the case.
