Kolkata, Oct. 13 -- The Supreme Court on Tuesday reportedly dismissed a plea by former Rajganj block development officer Prasanta Burman, directing him to comply with the Calcutta High Court's order to surrender in a case involving the alleged abduction and murder of a gold trader.

The court expressed surprise that Burman had not complied with the High Court's directions. The bench also questioned the state government over its failure to implement the order, urging it to take immediate steps.

The High Court had directed Burman to surrender by last Thursday, warning that his properties could otherwise be attached. Burman subsequently approached the Supreme Court challenging the order. During Tuesday's hearing, the bench questioned why he had failed to surrender despite the judicial directions. Observing that one individual appeared to be making a mockery of the entire system, the court expressed concern over the continued non-compliance.

Burman, who has been accused in the Salt Lake gold trader case, has reportedly been absconding for a prolonged period.
