Kolkata, Oct. 16 -- The Supreme Court has granted bail to Sandip Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, in a CBI case alleging financial irregularities at the institution and manipulation of merit scores to favour undeserving candidates.
A bench of Justices MM Sundresh and Prasanna B Varale passed the order on October 15, setting aside the Calcutta High Court's February 23 order that had rejected Ghosh's bail plea.
The court took into account that Ghosh had spent more than two years in custody while the trial had made limited progress.
Of the 147 witnesses cited in the case, only seven had been examined, the bench noted.
