Malda, July 8 -- A forensic team from Jalpaiguri visited the crime scene in English Bazar, Malda, on Wednesday to collect evidence in connection with the alleged rape of a 12-year-old schoolgirl.
According to police, the incident took place last Sunday when the minor was allegedly forcibly taken to a house by her neighbour, 30-year-old Rabiul Sheikh, who allegedly gagged her and raped her. Within 24 hours of the complaint, police arrested Sheikh from Purnia, Bihar. He is currently in police custody.
Forensic officials collected multiple samples from the spot as part of the ongoing investigation. The victim was sent for medical examination following the incident.
Local residents have alleged that Sheikh was not of good character and that two of his wives had left him due to alleged abuse.
Several locals have demanded strict action and called for capital punishment for the accused.
Police said investigations are underway and further action will be taken based on the findings of the forensic report and medical evidence. The victim's statement is also expected to be recorded as part of the probe.
