Kolkata, Oct. 3 -- Sagardighi MLA Bayron Biswas was injured after a fire broke out at his ancestral residence in Dhulian, Murshidabad, on Saturday morning. He was initially taken to a private nursing home owned by him and was later shifted to Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital for treatment.

The fire broke out around 11 am at the residence near Dak Bungalow More under Samserganj Police Station. Locals noticed thick smoke billowing from the premises and alerted the police and fire brigade. Several fire engines reached the spot and brought the blaze under control.

Biswas suffered burn injuries to his hands and legs, sources said. The residence also houses a bidi factory and a warehouse spread across a large portion of the premises, where substantial quantities of raw materials are stored.

Police are investigating whether the fire originated from the factory or elsewhere on the premises. The exact cause of the fire is yet to be established.

Police and the local administration said Biswas was in a stable condition.

Biswas is a legislator of the Ritabrata Banerjee-led Democratic Trinamool Congress (DTC).

Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said he would seek details of the incident and wished the MLA a speedy recovery.

Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, who had backed Biswas as the Congress candidate in the Sagardighi by-election, said: "Bayron is a very good person. I am very concerned about him. I pray to God that he recovers soon. I may go to see him if required."

DTC leader and MLA Ritabrata Banerjee said he was "deeply disturbed and pained" by the news and wished his "friend and colleague" a speedy recovery.
