Kolkata, Sept. 4 -- A technically demanding surgery for a rare neurological condition was successfully performed at Ruby General Hospital by consultant neurosurgeon Dr Biplav Singh.
The 35-year-old patient had been experiencing symptoms for nearly two years, including persistent pain at the back of the head, weakness in both upper limbs, reduced hand grip, balance and walking difficulties, and sensory disturbances.
Investigations revealed Chiari I malformation with significant cervical syringomyelia, along with assimilation of the first cervical vertebra (C1), making the surgical anatomy particularly complex.
The patient underwent an eight-hour procedure involving foramen magnum decompression, C1 laminectomy, release of cerebrospinal fluid from the cisterna magna, restoration of normal CSF flow and lax duroplasty using a vascularised pericranial graft.
The procedure aimed to relieve pressure at the brain-spinal cord junction and restore CSF circulation. The patient is now ambulatory and recovering well.
