Raiganj, Sept. 27 -- With Durga Puja around the corner, the state government has planned road repairs and reconstruction across all 27 wards of Raiganj municipality. Funds are also expected for installation of tri-colour decorative lights in different parts of the town.
State Education Minister and Raiganj MLA Kaushik Chowdhury announced the plans during a meeting with media persons in Raiganj on Saturday. According to him, the funds for road-related works will be provided by the state Urban Development department, while the North Bengal Development Department (NBDD) has assured financial support for installing colourful lights in different municipal wards.
The announcement comes at a time when residents have raised concerns over the poor condition of several roads in Raiganj. Many important roads in the town are reportedly in need of urgent repair.
Traditionally, the municipality undertakes repairs and renovation of major roads after Viswakarma Puja and before the festive season to ensure smoother movement of residents and visitors. However, this year no such work has started yet.
Chowdhury said that a high-level meeting had recently been held with the minister and senior officials of the state Urban Development department in Kolkata , where he requested funds for road development in Raiganj municipality.
"We have requested a considerable amount of funds for the development and reconstruction of roads in Raiganj municipality area. The department has allotted the funds and we hope that road construction work in all the municipal wards will begin before Durga Puja," Chowdhury said.
