Kolkata, July 6 -- The West Bengal government has extended the suspension of three senior IPS officers, including the former Commissioner of Kolkata Police, Vineet Kumar Goyal, former Deputy Commissioner (North), Abhishek Gupta, and Deputy Commissioner (Central), Indira Mukherjee, by 120 days.

The trio was initially suspended on May 15 this year by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari for alleged mishandling of the probe into the RG Kar Hospital rape and murder case, offering money to the victim's family and addressing a press conference without authorisation.

This extension aims to facilitate an impartial departmental inquiry into alleged lapses during the rape and murder investigation of the Post Graduate Trainee (PGT) doctor of RG Kar Hospital.

It may be mentioned that earlier, during the announcement of the suspension of these three IPS officers, the Chief Minister had made it clear that the state government will not get involved in the actual investigation of the crime, which is being conducted by the CBI.
