Kolkata, Sept. 1 -- Kolkata received 93.6 mm of rain till 11.30 am on Tuesday, as heavy showers lashed the city, particularly through Monday night. South Kolkata received more rain than the northern parts, leaving several roads and low-lying areas waterlogged and causing traffic snarls during the morning rush.
The rainfall figures recorded highlight the contrast. Salt Lake received 40.6 mm, Barrackpore 42 mm and Alipore 23 mm, while Canning recorded 44 mm and Panagarh 50 mm. In Kolkata, heavy rain was reported from Gariahat, Jadavpur and Behala through Monday night, while areas in North Kolkata, including Shyambazar and Sinthee, received comparatively less rain.
Waterlogging was reported across several parts of South Kolkata, including Gopal Mukherjee Road, Amir Ali Avenue, Loudon Street, Theatre Road, Rodon Street, Elgin Road, Justice Chandramadhab Road, DH Road, Taratala and CGR Road. Hastings' Down Ramp and Kidderpore were also affected.
In North Kolkata, parts of College Street and the Thanthania area remained waterlogged.
For Wednesday, the IMD has forecast light to moderate rain or thundershowers at most places in South Bengal. Heavy to very heavy rain of 70-200 mm is likely at isolated places in Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, Bankura, East and West Burdwan, Birbhum and Purulia. Gusty winds of 40-50 kmph may accompany thunderstorms in East Midnapore and South 24-Parganas, while other districts may see winds of 30-40 kmph.
